Students write book “All About Reflex”

Educator Spotlight: Ms. Carly Fox

Ms. Carly Fox, a teacher at Maury Elementary School in Washington, DC, is using Reflex to help her 2nd grade students learn their math facts. Some of her students love Reflex so much, they feel like experts. “During our informational writing unit, a few students chose to write an information book, ‘All About Reflex.’ The students wrote about the different games, why we use Reflex, how to play, and more!”

Student writing about Reflex

“Reflex is much more engaging than other fact fluency programs I have seen. It’s been a huge success! Students get very excited when they unlock a new game, and receive certificates for their achievement. We celebrate each other’s successes on Reflex. Students receive their certificates during our morning meetings and closing circles. The students celebrate their classmates, and get to take their certificates home to share with their families. I’ve heard from several families that they have made an area at home to hang up the certificates!”

Student writing about Reflex

Ms. Fox adds, “The data from Reflex has been incredible and the amount of progress the students have already made is impressive. This is my sixth year teaching second grade at my school, and this is by far the most growth I’ve seen in the first half of the school year. The students are so much more confident in the classroom with fact fluency activities, and as we work on solving 2- and 3-digit addition/subtraction problems, the students are much more accurate with their computation. When solving story problems, they can focus on the complexities of figuring out whether to add or subtract, knowing that they can rely on their fact fluency for the computation. Rather than spend time on these facts, students feel confident in knowing the facts, and can spend more brain-power on the more complex concepts required by problems or tasks.”
