Marie Wagner

Professional Development Administrator

quote start quote end I truly feel valued and listened to no matter who I am talking to.

What 3-5 adjectives best describe you?
Personable, passionate, learner, empathetic, helpful

Briefly describe your job… what do you really do at EL?
I help support the implementation team, our certified instructors, and the PD department. All my work is behind the scenes helping our team with what they need to be successful.

What do you like about working at EL?
Everyone! My team and department are so collaborative and supportive. Everyone really makes an effort to know that our work is appreciated. I truly feel valued and listened to no matter who I am talking to.

What's the most seriously fun thing you've ever done?
I love to travel; that is seriously fun to me. I can’t pick any one place that was the best, so I am going to go with a generic “travel”

Why is STEM education important, in your personal opinion?
STEM is everywhere and a part of us, no matter what you do for a living or hobby. It uses skills like communication, teamwork, writing, research, and intuition to inform our lives; sometimes answering questions we didn’t even know we had. I worked as a STEAM Camp educator for a week as a part of my AmeriCorps volunteering and watching the kids put together daily activities, things they did without much thought and realize that it was STEM was so cool. They realized that it isn’t about “intelligence” but about hard work and if they were willing to put in the work, then STEM wasn’t as scary or unattainable as they thought.

Time travel… past or future?
Past, I LOVE history documentaries. Both times I have been unemployed in my life, I became a YouTube expert on a ton of different historical topics, time periods, and people.

Chemistry or Biology?
No brainer…Biology! My bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in natural resources and environmental science.

Algebra or Geometry?
Algebra, I like having a set of rules to follow when I am in unknown territory.

Learn a language or learn how to code?
Language, I’ve tried to learn to code and cannot wrap my head around it. I also speak decent French, so I am ahead in that regard ??

Deep space or deep sea?
Deep Sea, I watched almost exclusively Animal Planet and David Attenborough growing up (I still do!), and Blue Planet made a huge impression on me.

Bill Nye or Neil DeGrasse Tyson?
I grew up in Seattle, so it has to be Bill Nye the Science Guy!

Einstein or Newton?
Neither; Marie Curie is way better.

Star Wars or Star Trek?
I saw Star Wars first, so it has a special place in my heart. My father was a major Trekky though.

Keyboard or Paper + Pencil?
I have a passion for Post-its. Office supply stores are one of my favorite places to browse.

Playlists or podcasts?
Podcasts, I am addicted to true crime podcasts. I am convinced that I will someday help solve a crime.

In the classroom… Front row or back row?
I hate having attention on me, but I also wanted the teacher to know I was paying attention. So, I am a firm “middler”.
